Abstract
Presented herein are techniques for providing power savings in access points by controlling the roaming of clients from access point to access point. In particular, the power status and power levels of the access points are adjusted dynamically and periodically to accommodate all the devices in an area. Techniques described herein predict locations of devices and, using a constraint optimization problem driven smart heuristic engine, determine the optimal power status and power levels for each access point in an area. Access points may remain in an active mode or may be placed in a power save mode to provide the signal strengths required for clients while also providing power savings.
