Abstract
With the drive towards making printers lower cost yet without losing any features that customers hold dear (such as doors or lids open/close, width sensing, etc), a logical choice of the multi-purpose sensing system is to use the Flatbed Scanner to scan these features. Scanner is an existing and very capable sensor with high resolution. For an example, a door open sensing scheme can be set up by design a flag linking door with scanner, using scanner to detect door open, therefore saves the cost for an opto sensor. Scanner stays at this position during idle state (which is outside of scan window), and scans this line periodically using either R, G, B (usually Green) to detect if pixels at specific region is covered by flag or not, and report door status. Flag can be white color and the background can be dark color parts.
