Abstract

Devices with near-field communication (NFC) capabilities enable users to make contactless payments at a point of purchase. The hardware NFC components within a device are booted up when the user indicates the intent to perform an NFC action with an explicit triggering action which adds to the overall time for completing the transaction. This disclosure describes techniques that employ ultra-wideband (UWB) communication channels to predict the intent to initiate an NFC transaction and preemptively boot NFC components to reduce latency. With user permission, the device trajectory is obtained based on UWB and is analyzed with a suitably trained classifier to obtain high quality prediction of the intent to initiate an NFC transaction. When the intent is detected, NFC components are booted up preemptively, without waiting for explicit triggering action from the user. The techniques reduce the total time required for completing the NFC transaction and provide a quick, seamless user experience.
