Abstract
A technique is proposed herein for recording a multi-participant video experience in a form that permits a viewer to select or change a supported video layout during playback, rather than being limited to a predetermined composition. The technique determines a bounded set of archived video sources and resolutions from the pane requirements of supported layouts and the priorities of sources during the experience. Only selected sources are archived at resolutions sufficient to populate the available layouts with the corresponding live-experience video quality, without storing every participant stream at full resolution. Playback combines selected video sources with archived audio and participant metadata, allowing layout changes and recording controls such as seeking and faster-than-real-time playback. The source-selection approach reduces and bounds storage and processing requirements as meeting size increases, subject to the supported layout set.
