Abstract
Extended reality displays can have a limited field of view, so virtual objects moving outside the active display area become unviewable to a user. To indicate a location of an off-screen virtual object, a computing system may use simulated light transport to cast a virtual reflection onto a physical surface visible within the active display area. The computing system can generate a three-dimensional map of a physical environment and, using a ray marching algorithm, calculate simulated light paths emitted from the off-screen virtual object. A rendering of a resulting simulated illumination on the visible physical surface can provide a visual cue to the user regarding a position and a characteristic of the off-screen virtual object. This simulated reflection can facilitate spatial positioning without using artificial on-screen indicators.
