Abstract

This disclosure describes a hybrid drive for snow bikes, snowmobiles, stand-up snow scooters, ATV and side-by-side track kits, and other vehicles driven by an endless track on snow. The drive replaces the usual belt CVT with a planetary power-split gear. The gear connects a fuel-burning engine, a first motor-generator (MG1), and the track drive. By controlling MG1, a controller holds the engine at its best speed at any track speed, with no belt, pulleys, or gear shifting. A second motor-generator (MG2) adds torque to the track and recovers energy during braking. In a key arrangement, MG2 is mounted on the track driveshaft or elsewhere in the track drive, not on the ring gear. A small battery or capacitor bank supplies boost power. The disclosure covers all six planetary gear assignments, six MG2 placements, two-stroke, four-stroke, Wankel, and inverted rotary engines, multiple energy storage types, and modes including electric launch, reverse through MG2, regenerative braking, deep-snow rocking, and quiet engine-off running. All combinations are disclosed.
