Abstract

MoreDAW is a music workstation that runs in a web browser. This publication discloses five techniques it uses. (1) A circular note pad whose dots are laid out by phyllotaxis, each turned 137.5° (the golden angle) from the last, with other layouts including Fibonacci rings and a harmonic (Tonnetz) grid. Touch or mouse gestures on it are recorded against the musical beat and replayed on every loop pass. (2) Conducting a virtual orchestra with an ordinary mouse and no button held: the bottom of each down-up stroke is a beat that sets the tempo, and the size of the stroke sets the loudness. (3) A panel of red, green and blue modifier controls, each driving an audio effect. A control’s level is the highest of several inputs at once (on-screen square, keyboard key, assigned MIDI control, gesture), and the active colors mix into the color of each touch. (4) A formant singing synthesizer in which the nth note of a MIDI track always sings the nth syllable of typed lyrics, so words stay aligned on every playback and export. (5) A chord track, typed or detected from notes, that writes pad, stab, bass and arpeggio parts with minimal-movement voice-leading, plus a player that turns typed digits into chords on scale degrees.
