Abstract
Digital payment systems may face challenges in environments with limited or no network connectivity, for example, with computing devices (e.g., a smartphone, feature phone, wearable device) that may have limited hardware capabilities. A system is disclosed for offline transactions that can use a device's secure element, such as a subscriber identity module. During a transaction, an applet on the secure element can debit a designated offline balance and generate a cryptographically signed token containing transaction details. This signed token can then be transmitted between devices using, for example, acoustic signals. A receiving device can locally verify the token's authenticity without a network connection. This approach can facilitate verifiable offline payments on a range of hardware.
