Abstract

A progressive addition ophthalmic lens system is disclosed that adds a Peripheral Distance Correction (PDC) profile in the lateral peripheral regions of the distance vision zone without altering the boundaries of the conventional zone geometry (distance zone, corridor and near zone) of the underlying progressive design. The PDC profile comprises a cylinder-correction component and, optionally, a mean-power-correction component, each varying with local aberration in the target zone. The displaced aberration is directed, in a fixed and predetermined manner, toward the lateral peripheral near vision zone, chosen for its greater tolerance for optical error and lower gaze usage. The profile transitions smoothly to zero at the corridor boundary with C1 continuity. The additional aberration introduced in the near zone is bounded by a differential threshold relative to a standard progressive lens of the same addition power, preferably 0.50 to 0.75 diopters, determined where applicable by multi-objective optimization. Embodiments are a rigid progressive lens with the PDC profile in its freeform surface, a flexible progressive element adhered to a monofocal base lens, and a flexible retrofit element adhered to an existing progressive lens, optionally repositionable after fitting to compensate for centration error.
