Abstract

A pressure-balanced door latch for a data center containment plenum uses the differential pressure gradient between a hot aisle and a cold aisle to engage its latching mechanism. The latch housing contains a dual-ported pneumatic chamber with a piston mechanically coupled to a deadbolt. As the differential pressure rises (typically in the range of 0.010 to 0.200 inches of water), the force on the piston extends the deadbolt through a stroke gap of 0.25 to 1.5 inches, creating a scalable clamping force that provides a tight seal and self-releases at low pressure via a return spring. A mechanical emergency override, located on the interior of the door, interlocks with both the piston and a quick-exhaust needle valve. Actuating the emergency handle physically retracts the piston and simultaneously opens the valve to vent the pneumatic chamber. This dual-action override collapses the pressure gradient, allowing the return spring to retract the deadbolt and enable low-force, compliant egress under high-pressure conditions. Optionally, a passive, color-coded visual indicator flag mechanically coupled to the deadbolt shaft may provide instant floor-level status confirmation without requiring low-voltage wiring or electrical power.
