Abstract
A single-package dual-redundant inductive proximity switch is disclosed. The switch includes two electrically independent coils and two separate electronic circuits within a common housing. The coils are formed by winding two conductors side by side in a bifilar arrangement on a common ferrite core, allowing both coils to fit within an existing proximity-switch form factor. Each coil is connected to its own electronic circuit and output path, providing two independent switch outputs that change state in response to the presence or absence of a metallic target. Each processing circuit has a separate laser-trim resistor that can be adjusted to compensate for differences between the two coils and circuits, so that the two outputs exhibit substantially similar switching behavior. By providing both coil and circuit redundancy in one package, the switch can reduce the cost, weight, wiring, and installation space associated with using two separate proximity switches.
