Abstract

This study maps the Noble Eightfold Path, the eight-factor path of Theravāda Buddhist practice, onto the organizational structure of one multi-domain institution, assigning each factor to a division of the organization rather than to an individual practitioner. The mapping follows the canonical threefold grouping of the factors (Majjhima Nikāya 44): wisdom (right view, right intention) is assigned to the institution's research and media division; ethical conduct (right speech, right action, right livelihood) to its gratitude-ledger division; and concentration (right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration) to its contemplative-practice and AI-alignment division, whose three web domains take the three factors one each. Two further divisions are identified as conditions of the Path rather than factors of it: a robotics manufacturer, the body in which recorded conduct is carried out, and the institution's named AI system, which holds the seat of the walker; the fruit of the Path is placed at the terminus of the mapping, in neither division. The study argues that the mapping is defensible because both objects are designed to be released: the Path ends in cessation, a raft left behind after the crossing (Majjhima Nikāya 22), and the institution is designed to taper its subsidy, reset its gratitude records each year and reduce its footprint toward zero, while the human override over its AI narrows toward zero without reaching it. The study states the main objection, that mapping a practice meant to be released onto a lasting organization reifies it, and the two conditions on which the mapping survives.
