Abstract

A network element that originates a summary route for an address block, and that would otherwise install a drop action entry for that summary prefix, first tests whether the element independently holds an active route of shorter prefix length that covers the summary prefix and that resolves to a usable forwarding next hop. Where such a covering route is held, and where the covering route does not resolve back through a peer to which the element advertises the summary, the element withholds the drop action entry, marks it inactive, or resolves it recursively through the covering route. Traffic for destinations inside the summary prefix but outside every more specific entry is then forwarded along the covering route rather than discarded. The test is re-evaluated on routing table change events, and the drop action entry is restored before the covering route is removed.
