Abstract
This disclosure relates to electronic input devices for portable computers and, more particularly, to a stylus that occupies less space when stored within a computer enclosure. The stylus includes an outer body section, a movable body section, a releasable locking mechanism, a magnetically responsive actuator, and a restoring mechanism. A docking magnet positioned in or near a stylus storage compartment acts on the actuator as the stylus is inserted. The magnetic interaction releases the locking mechanism and permits the movable body section to retract into a compact storage configuration. When the stylus is removed, the magnetic interaction decreases, the restoring mechanism extends the movable body section, and the locking mechanism secures the stylus in an extended operating configuration. The arrangement reduces the required storage volume while preserving a substantially full-length gripping surface during use.
