Abstract

This study begins from the premise that the standard seven-day calendar, epitomized by the structure of five working days and two days of rest, is not a natural temporal order but a social convention shaped by religious traditions, political institutions, and the labor systems of modern capitalism. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, the study introduces the concept of “Day-of-the-Week Habitus” to describe the unconscious internalization of standardized weekday discipline in everyday life. The study seeks to examine how this habitus may be recognized and challenged, and to explore the possibility of restoring time sovereignty through alternative calendar design.

To establish a theoretical foundation, two perspectives were employed. First, based on Edward Hall’s distinction between M-Time and P-Time, time was reinterpreted through two complementary perspectives: time as position and time as line. Through this framework, the temporal structures of the Trobriand Islanders, Eskimo society, the Nuer, and modern society were compared, revealing the historical and cultural contingency of the modern seven-day calendar. Second, Hall’s nine categories of time were combined with everyday-life examples discussed in Bourdieu’s Distinction to construct a 12-Domain Time Experience Model. The model is organized according to three dimensions—controllability, level of consciousness, and relationality—and serves as the basis for deriving six alternative calendar types: the Free-Cycle Type, Project Type, Shift-Work Type, Life-Centered Type, Global Time-Zone Type, and Selectable-Holiday Type, together with a supplementary Standard Calendar Type.

To examine the applicability of the model and the proposed calendar types, in-depth interviews were conducted with twelve individuals whose lives do not conform to standard weekday-centered rhythms. The interview data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis, resulting in sixty initial codes, three overarching themes, and eight sub-themes. During the analysis, a supplementary Standard Calendar Type was additionally derived. When the interview findings were mapped onto the 12-Domain Time Experience Model and the seven calendar types (six alternative calendar types and one supplementary Standard Calendar Type), previously overlooked domains of time experience within the conventional standard calendar were identified. Participants generally did not reject the standard temporal framework outright; rather, they sought to adjust and manage time according to their own living conditions, suggesting a need for greater temporal autonomy and supporting the necessity of alternative calendar design.

Based on these findings, the study developed a prototype alternative calendar, Soonhwal, which enables users to combine and transition between seven calendar types according to their circumstances. The prototype visualizes eight domains (➊➋➍➏➐➒➓⓫) of the 12-Domain Time Experience Model and is designed to support the coexistence of personal rhythms and socially shared temporal structures.

The study demonstrates that calendars can function not only as instruments that align individuals with social standards but also as tools through which individuals define, negotiate, and coordinate their own temporal rhythms. By translating the concept of time sovereignty into a practical design framework, this research expands discussions of time from the domains of sociology and anthropology into the field of calendar design and proposes an alternative approach for accommodating non-standard life rhythms.
