Abstract

A control-plane route staling mechanism for an Ethernet Virtual Private Network (EVPN) is disclosed. When a single-homed link between a local Provider Edge (PE) router and a Customer Edge (CE) device fails, the local PE router removes the associated Media Access Control (MAC) and Internet Protocol (IP) forwarding entries from its hardware forwarding table, retains the corresponding EVPN Type 2 routes in its local routing information base, suppresses Type 2 withdrawals, and starts a configurable stale timer. The local PE router readvertises the EVPN Type 1 Ethernet auto-discovery route for the Ethernet Segment with a predefined stale route target in place of the standard MAC virtual routing and forwarding route target. Remote PE routers deactivate the Ethernet Segment and remove dependent forwarding entries while retaining the routes. Link restoration before timer expiry restores forwarding directly from retained control-plane state.
