Abstract

This publication describes a new accessibility feature for devices like smartphones, tablets, and computers that makes hands-free navigation and voice control much easier to use. When a person uses spoken audio input or speech commands to operate their device while multiple windows are open, it can be confusing to know exactly which app or screen they are controlling. To solve this, the device automatically figures out which application windows are unoccluded by other application windows on the screen and draws a bright, colorful border (like an accessibility focus ring) around them. This primary visual indicator shows the user exactly where their voice access services or dictation software will take action. If the user decides to type into a specific search bar or text box using speech-to-text, a second distinct border appears around that specific box while it is active. By providing these clear visual clues, this assistive technology prevents mistakes, reduces confusion, and makes using speech commands highly intuitive.
