Abstract

A multilayered surface relief grating structure for near-eye displays (NEDs) consists of two or more layers wherein each layer has the same spatial pitch and is laterally offset from one another by a distance calculated to exploit controlled phase interference. Such a grating reduces the privacy concerns regarding eyeglow through destructive interference of display light leakage on the worldside while enhancing efficiency on the eyeside due to constructive interference.
