Abstract
This publication describes systems and techniques for route planning to enhance communications access, including the use of non-terrestrial network (NTN) coverage, during the course of a journey. The system identifies one or more routes to a destination and determines which of the routes may provide reliable access to communications resources, including terrestrial networks and/or NTN. Additionally, when NTN communications resources are used, the system may identify one or more suitable departure times such that travel coincides with favorable NTN coverage across the route. Thus, the system accesses map and travel data, terrestrial network coverage maps, NTN coverage maps and schedules, and topographic/obstruction data to identify a suitable route and/or travel time to provide consistent communications access throughout the journey. In aspects, the system may prioritize routes based on particular aspects of the journey when communications access may be preferred. In addition, the system may inform communications systems of potential gaps in communications access so that, when applicable, the communications systems may pre-fetch or download data for access during gaps in communications access.
