Abstract

This disclosure relates to application systems comprising an electrical machine having a rotor, a stator, one or more windings, and optionally one or more externally pressurized fluid bearings configured to maintain a fluid film between movable and stationary machine parts. In particular, the disclosure describes use of such electrical machines as motors, motor- generators or generators in wind turbines and wind power plants, and as motors, motor- generators or generators in marine propulsion systems, including pod propulsion systems, azimuthing thrusters, tunnel thrusters, rim-driven propulsors, shaft-line propulsion systems, pump jets, and water jets. The electrical machine may comprise an axial flux, radial flux, transverse flux, azimuthal flux, poloidal flux, flux-switching, magnetic-gearing, permanent- magnet, wound-field, reluctance, switched-reluctance, synchronous, asynchronous, or hybrid topology. In some embodiments, the machine comprises multiple air gaps, interleaved ro- tor and stator discs, magnetically connected end-cap discs, winding loops enclosing flux from multiple magnetic poles, and an electromagnetic topology configured for operation by switching of magnetic flux. The application systems may further comprise pressurized fluid supply systems, fluid dis- tribution systems, redundant pumps or compressors, accumulators, reservoirs, check valves, restrictors, filters, coolers, heatexchangers, sensors, powerelectronics, controllers, emergency 1 power supplies, and fault-response functions configured to maintain at least partial fluid-film separation between rotor andstatorduring normal operation, transient operation, faultoper- ation, shutdown, blackout, emergency stop, grid loss, coast-down, rundown, windmilling, or limp-home operation. Cooling arrangements may use air, oil, water, glycol, dielectric liquid, seawater, freshwater, refrigerant, two-phase fluids, hull cooling, nacelle cooling, tower cool- ing, platform cooling, or combinations thereof. Control systems may coordinate generator or motortorque, electricalcurrent, fluidpressure, fluidflow, fluidtemperature, coolingcapacity, pitch, yaw, azimuth angle, propeller pitch, dynamic positioning, vessel energy management, wind farm control, and protective derating. The purpose of this disclosure is to make available a broad range of combinations of such electrical machines, fluid bearing systems, cooling systems, power electronics, control systems, wind turbine subsystems, wind farm subsystems, marine propulsion subsystems, and pod propulsion subsystems. This disclosure combines the described electrical machine family with application components, control methods, cooling systems, fluid systems, power electronics, and operational modes used in wind power generation and marine propulsion, in order to disclose such combinations as complete application systems.
