Abstract
This disclosure describes a bench‑scale, open‑hardware system that combines:
-
A modular extracorporeal flow loop with several plug‑in conditioning cartridges
-
A vascular‑support cartridge that shapes pressure and shear
-
A non‑invasive lung and clot monitoring rig using sensors on simple phantoms
-
A transparent control and safety layer
The goal is to give researchers a physical platform to study how:
-
Removing or reshaping particle/aggregate loads in a flowing fluid
-
Adjusting pressure and shear envelopes
-
And continuously monitoring respiratory‑like and clot‑like signals
may support future adjunctive strategies for sepsis and ARDS‑like syndromes.
This system is not a medical device, not for human or animal use, and is intended only for in‑vitro and ex‑vivo research. It is fully open‑hardware and non‑proprietary.
Background
Sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remain major causes of ICU mortality worldwide. Current tools include:
-
Pharmacologic therapies: antibiotics, antivirals, vasopressors, steroids, anticoagulants
-
Ventilatory support: oxygen therapy, non‑invasive ventilation, mechanical ventilation
-
Extracorporeal support: CRRT, ECMO, and in some centers, hemoadsorption
These approaches are powerful but limited in how they:
-
Directly modulate particle/aggregate loads (microclots, immune complexes, microplastics, debris) in the circulation
-
Shape vascular leak and endothelial stress through controlled pressure and shear envelopes
-
Provide continuous, integrated early‑warning signals for lung and clot deterioration in a research setting
There is a need for open, modular, bench‑scale platforms that allow researchers to explore these physical and hemodynamic dimensions in a controlled way, before any clinical translation is attempted.
This disclosure proposes such a platform: the Caldwell–Copilot Modular Sepsis–ARDS Support Loop (C‑C MASS‑Loop v1.0).
