Abstract
Proposed herein is a Spectral Hole Burning (SHB)-Free Optical Signal-to-Noise Ratio (OSNR) Estimation Algorithm that properly estimates the gain shift induced by the SHB on a Device Under Test (DUT) during channel removal and derives the Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) noise level within the signal bandwidth. Experimental comparisons with the conventional procedures have shown how the algorithm provides the ability to properly derive the OSNR in a dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) coherent optical link without any further narrow-spectrum probe to perform the measurement. Experimental results have revealed that the proposed algorithm is able to “clean” the result of the measurement from the SHB impact, preserving the noise shape inside the bandwidth of the channel under test. In some instances, the algorithm may be suitable for implementation in an automated test procedure or in any practical application that seeks to derive the link OSNR in real time on the field.
