Abstract
This disclosure presents the GCI Spark Plug Extension Vortex Adapter, a universal bolt-on passive pre-chamber ignition system designed to improve combustion efficiency, stability, and lean-burn capability in spark-ignited internal combustion engines. The system integrates a compact pre-chamber extension between the spark plug and cylinder head, enabling high-energy jet ignition through controlled pressure buildup and directional discharge.
The design is structured as a dual-family architecture (Light and Heavy variants) to accommodate differences in engine displacement and load conditions. A three-axis tuning framework—pre-chamber volume, jet flow area, and discharge aggression—is introduced to standardize optimization across engine platforms.
Key engineering features include a pressure-timed jet bias (PTJB) geometry to shape discharge timing, a directional multi-jet nozzle for controlled flame propagation, micro-textured internal surfaces for fouling resistance and mixture stability, and a controlled purge port for residual gas management. The system is defined using non-dimensional relationships, including jet-to-throat area ratios, to ensure scalability and repeatability.
Expected performance improvements include extension of lean combustion limits, reduction in burn duration, and improved combustion stability, with projected efficiency gains dependent on engine configuration and calibration. Final performance characteristics require validation through dynamometer testing, including measurement of combustion variability, fuel consumption, and emissions.
This disclosure is intended as an open, build-ready engineering framework to enable independent fabrication, testing, and further development.
