Abstract
Proposed herein is a new algorithm to facilitate fan speed control (FSC) for cooling fans of electronic devices that utilizes existing sensor readings for a device to determine the altitude at which the device is operating. With this estimated altitude value, fan speed control mechanisms can be enhanced from conventional two-dimensional (2D) control techniques that only consider temperature versus (vs) duty cycle to three-dimensional (3D) control techniques that consider temperature vs altitude vs duty cycle to manage fan speed. Utilizing techniques as proposed herein, an optimized fan speed control mechanism can be provided for electronic devices that reduces power consumption and provides optimum cooling for any given environmental condition.
