The present disclosure relates to a process for the preparation of the compound of formula-2, which is a key intermediate in the synthesis of Palbociclib of formula-1.

The present disclosure also provides a novel compound of 6-acetyl-2-bromo-8-cyclopentyl-5-methylpyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-7(8H)-one formula-2a.
