Abstract

Application developers may include telemetry logging to their application code to determine the circumstances around behavior regressions; to triage bugs; etc. Risks associated with telemetry include the risk to the user of sensitive information being uploaded; the risk assumed by the service provider in accepting telemetry data; etc. This disclosure describes techniques to compute the risk associated with telemetry data by weighing each piece of data by a data-type-dependent weight and summing over the volume of data. The aggregate risk is used to make informed decisions on the types of telemetry to be targeted for risk reduction. Risk reduction can be achieved by reducing the number of participating devices; by reducing the frequency of measurement; by removing certain data types from the telemetry; etc. The techniques can also be used to cap the amount of telemetry risk that a given device can take on within a given period of time.
