Abstract
Existing data storage solutions differ along various characteristics, such as portability, flexibility, scalability, hybridity, security, dependability, availability, capacity, affordability, etc. Each individual storage solution offers strengths in one or more, but not all, of storage properties. This disclosure describes a storage framework to offer users a solution that is simultaneously portable, hybrid, flexible, scalable, secure, convenient, and affordable. A portable storage device with normal storage and trusted storage with enhanced security is provided. The storage device includes hardware user interface to enable users to access the device and to authenticate themselves. The storage device includes physical network interfaces (wired and wireless) that enable the device to be accessed over a network. The described techniques offer a portable, flexible storage solution with hybridity. The need to connect/disconnect a physical storage device to a particular device each time a user wishes to access data is eliminated. Users can access their stored data securely from multiple devices and can offer access to third-parties. The data is accessible even for users not connected to the Internet, thus eliminating the dependency on having access to the network at all times and locations.
