Abstract

Labyrinth seals play a crucial role in shaft sealing applications in protecting bearings and preventing contamination. However, they tend to have high leakage values which negatively impact compressor efficiency. This proposed solution discloses a screw seal comprising a helical groove that is continuously cut on either or both the rotor and stator surfaces. This has shown reduced net leakage flow of about 30 percent improving the overall machine efficiency.
