Abstract

Navigation guidance provided via digital map applications and/or in-car infotainment systems includes turn-by-turn instructions. Personalization of such instructions, e.g., based on a user’s places visited or routes taken, can make navigation easier and more natural. However, if there is a co-passenger in the vehicle when personalized navigation guidance is provided, it may inadvertently reveal information about places that a user has visited. Per techniques described in this disclosure, co-presence information is detected based on various factors such as determining whether additional devices that do not belong to the user are present, based on ambient sound detection, based on in-vehicle sensors such as a seat occupancy sensor, etc. The level of personalization is automatically adjusted based on whether there are one or more co-passengers, and whether the co-passengers are known to the user.
