Abstract

Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) User-Network Interface (UNI) client (UNI-C) to UNI network (UNI-N) environments created overlay models which broke the isolation barriers between the dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) world and Internet Protocol (IP) router world. Techniques are presented herein that support the bridging of a gap in an IP over DWDM environment. By applying aspects of the presented techniques, a DWDM interface becomes capable of knowing the actual data rate of a given IP interface. Such information is highly useful in traffic engineering (TE) decisions and vendor network optimizations.
