Abstract
A steering wheel includes a steering wheel rim. A first electrode is connected to the steering wheel rim. A second electrode is connected to the steering wheel rim adjacent the first electrode. In one configuration, the first and second electrodes are interdigitated. At least one evaluation and control device (“EVCD”) is connected to the first and second electrodes. The at least one EVCD is switchable between a self-capacitance sensing mode and a mutual capacitance sensing mode. The at least one EVCD drives a current into the first electrode and senses a change in capacitance at the first electrode with respect to ground when in the self-capacitance sensing mode. The at least one EVCD drives a current through the first electrode that passes into the second electrode and senses a change in capacitance between the first and second electrodes when in the mutual capacitance sensing mode.
