OPEN LOCATION CODE

Stephen Zelinka

Abstract

An open location encoding method can be used to encode latitude and longitude coordinates (World Geodetic System 84 coordinates) of a location into a simplified ten character code. The open location code is in base 20. The ten characters of the code represent a 14 X 14 meter area on a map instead of a point on the map. The 14 X 14 meter is a suitable area for covering most buildings. For buildings with area smaller than 14 X 14, an eleven character open location code is used. The eleventh character of the code is encoded using a different method than the one used for the first ten characters of the code.
